Operation Nature Boy Upgrade – part I

23 Feb

With some time on my hands I started stage 1 of upgrading my All City Nature Boy SSCX rig.  Its been more or less stock the entire time.  The saddle came off pretty quickly after rubbing me the wrong way, fenders were added, and wheels have transferred around but nothing major.  A couple weeks back after shearing the bolt in the oem generic seat post, I decided it was time. I picked up a Thomson Masterpiece to keep things classy.

Stem, bars, and cranks are next on my agenda for the Nature Boy.

Then a quick application of electrical tape to keep things low-key for city use.

Presidents Day… Scratch That, Surgery.

19 Feb

I had written a Presidents Day – White Clay MTB post on Tuesday that I was going to post but ended leaving work early to head to the doctors after a slipped wheel/pedal to the top tube… that was still giving me pain a day later. I hadnt thought much of it as it happened about 20 minutes into the ride and we MTB’ed around for another 2+ hours. After scheduling an ultrasound with the doctor for the next day I headed home. Later that night I ended up catching a cab to the E.R. as the pain was too much. After a few tests and ultrasound I ended up getting surgery around 4am. Surgery went as well and now Im back home watching shitty TV shows, lurking the internet, and trying to heal. Im really glad we made that Total Wine stop too!

I have learned that MTBing is no joke. in less than 20 rides if managed to crack a frame, put my front tooth through my lip, and received some unexpected surgery. Just hope ill be back in the saddle to try out a MTB race this year!

TOTAL WINE TRIP:  Lionshead in a microbrew pack eh?

Im around all week if anyone wants to dip into my newly acquired total wine purchases 🙂

The E.R. waiting room is a wild place.

The lady came early the next morning after surgery and claimed I asked to take a photo of me looking dead.  Not sure if I believe it though.

This and that

15 Feb

Havent done much as of late. Last weekend we hit the slopes after a solid ½” of snow. Afterwards we met up with some teammates for food/beer at Appalachian Brewing Co. Im always amazed how brew houses have stepped their game up, especially around here. I remember being jealous of the small brewpubs in Colorado and the innovative beers they manages to cook up. Now I feel like the majority of local small breweries in philly make some really great brews that you actually want more of.

Oh yah and more flats and a couple more flats.

20130215-090517.jpg

Philly always impresses me. On the commute home I stumbled upon this random boat that was shipwrecked in a vacant lot. There were piles of trash, random objects, and broken TVs inside.

20130215-090526.jpg

Last night instead of going out I made some food, pounded a 750mL, rode up to get some ice cream, then devoured this wild BFM and watched TV. It was a good night.

Shouldn’t have said it

8 Feb

I made a post yesterday about mechanicals (something you should never do) and The Cycling Gods were not pleased.

The commute home was not so fun with this Nor’easter on the way, got home swapped bikes quickly, grabbed some gummi-sugar-things for the jersey pocket, and rushed out the door in order to hit some single track at Belmont. During the night MTB session (my first ever) with Stevie Snax I snapped my chain.

This is him taking photos while I fumbled with my crankbros multi-tool chain breaker.

Mechanicals

7 Feb

I shouldn’t complain but I will… I wore down my rear tire not too long ago, it was a 25c Thickslick which I swear by for their puncture resistance at a really cheap price <$25/tire. The downside is they are on the heavy side depending on which model you go with. I had started to get punctures as the contact patch flatten/thinned throughout the lats couple months then I blew a sidewall on their steel bead model. I hate blowing side walls and that’s why I gave up on $45 Gatorskins. After that I was in the mood to try something new and wanted something a tad wider for the gravel double track that’s part of my commute. I was between the Schwalbe Marathon Supremes, Panaracer RiBMo’s, and the Panaracer T-serv’s. I went with the Panaracer RiBMo’s in a 28c as they were on sale for $33.

My first inspection of the tires showed a pretty durable sidewall and a triangular cross-section with a health amount of rubber at the contact patch down the center. I strapped it onto the rear and realized that the tire/rim combo was on the tougher side of tires to mount with the stiff sidewall not helping the cause. Like anything new, I was excited to try the tires out as I had heard great reviews from rando/touring/commuter folk on the intranets.

On the morning of my third commute and 74 miles total on the tire, I heard a loud PSSHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. When I got off my bike I went straight to the front tire just to realized my brand new rear Rimbo was flat. A piece of glass had sliced all the way through the tire and casing at the center section with the most protection. Lame. I usually buy new tires for the winter so I don’t have a flat based mechanical when its cold out because that time off the bike equals sweat which equals you’re going to be freezing. I always bring a LS shell or windvest to throw on when I get pedaling again for circumstances like this but its never fun to warm back up all wet with sweat. I used part of an old bib number and wrapped it around the tube so that the tube didn’t expand through the missing chunk of tire. I know the flat was ‘bad luck’ but seriously >100miles and a flat already? Maybe these tires are tough for non-city/urban/philly roads but on my commute the roads are 90% asphalt, 8% glass/debris, and 2% trash. Sorry, rant over.

20130207-112643.jpg

Oh and the other morning I was riding, heard a weird metal jingle noise and looked back to my saddle on the ground. The bolt had sheared on the generic seatpost that had come on my All City Nature Boy. Luckily I was on a few miles out, so I turned around and rode home. It was like riding a big BMX bike long distances… not a fun thing at all. New parts soon to come for the SSCX build.

Under saddle shot of the shear bolt and the plastic bags i keep under my seat for rain protection.

This weekend four of us drove down to Louisville, KY for the Cyclocross World Championships which were in the United States for the first time ever.  We packed our bikes, some clothes, and a couple sleeping bags in the Sprinter van and got to it.

And finally got to Kentucky.

20130204-171226.jpg

Before heading to Louisville we headed down to Lexington first to drop off a set of VW seats.

The Pad Thai was the ticket.

20130204-171325.jpg

We met up with Jeff and some of the BikeSport guys at the Holy Grale and drank some proper beers.

After all the races we rode straight to the hotel to warm our bodies and grab some actual food.  We headed to the ‘foam-party’ but was let down by the lack of foam.

20130204-171915.jpg

20130204-171930.jpg

The party did have some cross celebs though.

20130204-171947.jpg

I took photos of other people with the elite men and women’s champ.  Pete was in heaven with Sven Nys (elite men’s world champ) and may have had the best night of his life before our partying even started.

20130204-171954.jpg

Gerry looked pretty excited as well with the women’s world champ!

20130204-171935.jpg

We cruised downtown to the tourist spots and took advantage of the cheap beer in the southmidwest …. whatever it is they call Kentucky.

20130204-172003.jpg

After a late night we got back on the road Sunday for the long drive home…  It was an epic weekend with some great people.
