Memorial Day Weekend 2013

27 May

This weekend was all over the place. Friday I finished up a SS city bike build for a buddy using my old Fuji that I welded back to life.

Then we saw a trash truck get stuck in the mud of a closed road on our way to meet a buddy at Yard’s Brewery.

On the way home.

Saturday morning a few of us cruised to White Clay, DE to ride some single track.  It was a tad wet in the gullies but the strong windy kept us off the road bikes.

Then Rich got a bit too rad and rolled his tubeless tire and somehow put a hole in the sidewall that the Stan’s couldnt contain.  Stan’s sealant was seriously spraying everywhere.

After a couple hours of riding and a ‘quick’ trip to Total Wine, we drove back to the city for some food.  I opted for a Citywide (PBR and a shot of Beam) and some veggie wings from Cedar Point  Some of their food is hit or miss but the wings are top notch.

20130527-175613.jpg

Oh yah then it was ice cream time…

20130527-175618.jpg

I unpacked my loot from Total Wine.  They started to carry a fee select Italian beers… aka bad news.

20130527-175624.jpg

Sunday morning I went out to spectate/heckle a trail race the lady was doing, the Dirty German up in PennyPack park.  I had a cowbell tied to my bag and I was like a “ninja” as one runner told me as I was all over the course.  I also didn’t realize some people didn’t know what a cowbell was… I guess they need more cyclocross in their lives/

While we were relaxing someone through out the idea of camping, so we gathered somethings and rode to catch a ride

20130527-175704.jpg

We cruised out to French Creek/St. Pete’s to jump around on some rocks.

We packed it in early Monday morn and headed back.  We were both a bit wiped and kept it lazy not even make it to a single BBQ for the holiday.

I Like Turtles

24 May

The last few days have been warm, overly humid, and a bit rainy. Luckily Wednesday was nice for the opening of the new Paine’s skatepark/skateplaza in Philly. It only took 10+ years and $4.5 million too finally get it done, but its actually all together.. Wednesday was a mob scene, but Thursday morning I was able to rip around some bowl corners on the all city and get #rad.

20130524-111519.jpg

Last night it was raining pretty heavily so I took the trail through the wildlife preserve back into the city. I had never seen turtles on the trail before then but had one stare me down looking tough and the other crawl into his shell asap.

Dirt Fest 2013

19 May

This weekend a crew of us drove out to Dirt Rag’s Dirt Fest at Raystown Lake kind of by Altoona, PA. It’s more or less a long weekend of camping, riding MTBs, and beer. It definitely didn’t disappoint and was a blast. On top of that bicycle manufacturers brought fleets of top of the line bikes (mostly full carbon) for people to demo as well as a few wheel manufactures for you to demo their wheels. This was perfect for us as the lady wanted to try MTBing before actually buying one. She might be hooked.

The trail system out there is super flowy and fast with a good amount of elevation (think White Clay, DE but with more climbing and much faster). I had a good time cruising around with old/new friends, hanging with the ladies trying to get their confidence up, and ripping WAAAY past my comfort level with Harlan and the Industry Nine crew. I havnt had that much fun in quite a while. Dirt Fest will definitely be on the agenda for next year!

I had T-Rex drive a bit when i got tired.

This bike was ridiculous/ Instead of handle bars it had ropes, the saddle was a horse, and the hubs on the wheels were offset so it bucked you like a bronco. I dont think anyone could ride it for more than a couple yards.

By the Whey Protein Criterium – 2013

13 May

Saturday a few of us rolled around Fairmont Park to spin the legs. A few of us were on the fence about racing Smoketown but the chance of rain and long distance kept us staying out late and riding local. It was a good choice.

20130513-112217.jpg

I left the city Sunday morning with Max and the lady to race the By The Whey Protein Crit (cat4) on the Rodale course. I really wanted to make a break happen and tried a few times but couldn’t stay away. A tad too much wind with so few of us I suppose, but we had a solid group of 4 for a couple laps. The race wasn’t too sketchy but I did a fair bit of sitting outside of the pack as the crash at Lower Providence still had me a tad shook. On the last lap things slowed as usual then ramped up on the uphill round-a-bout with people searching for position. On the downhill chicane, Myles from Ciclismo went hard and had a sizable gap on the field. I know hes got legs and I knew he had a solid chance of staying away so I tried to ‘encourage’ the guy in front of me to chase right after I yelled at him for cutting me off, unfortunately he blew up. Now I was at the front of the pack waaaay too early. The train passed me hard on the right hand side (see in the video from Bryan). I jumped on the back of the train and rubbed elbows with someone (sorry about that!) and tried to finish with the leaders without actually standing up and sprinting. I felt like I was riding a bit sketchy out there for some reason. I don’t know if it was my lack on wanting to sit in or what, but I need to work on that as well as being a bit more patient, especially towards the end.

Gray’s Ferry Crescent

9 May

I took a different route home the other day needing to run an errand. On the way over the Gray’s Ferry Bridge (which does have a bike lane but is filled with more debris than any other lane in the city) I stopped at the Gray’s Ferry Crescent. This trail will eventually hook into the rest of the ‘Greenway’ along the east bank of the Schuylkill River going north up to the Art Muesuem and eventually south to PHL Airport.  Anyways I wanted to check it out as I heard they started building a concrete skate park down there. Its wild that the city is finally putting in not 1, but 2 skate parks on the trail. Good for them!

T-Town & Broad St.

5 May

This weekend was a busy one. Friday night was first Friday and we checked out some friends work.  I really like these Tour de France prints!

20130505-164439.jpg

After a couple hours of sleep a crew of us went to the Trexlertown Velodrome semi-annual bicycle swap. I brought up my Spooky Supertouch cross bike to maybe sell but didn’t do well at hanging out to actually sell it.

20130505-164444.jpg

I was able to buy a complete road bike off a teammate for a buddy. I’m always excited to get people on bikes! I was able to score a set of new 23mm Gatorskins for $20, set of new marathon tires for $45, compact cranks for $10, 2x roof rack wheel carriers $5, and a set of Ultegra road pedals for lady $15 [the prices are so I can remember when I go back to look :)]. Overall it was a good day.

20130505-164448.jpg

Sunday morning I woke up around 7am to drive the lady to the neatest Septa stop to take the subway north for the Broad Street Run. I came home, took a well needed shower and ate some food. I then decided to try and run as well. I threw a jersey and cap on and rode to the Spring Garden Station. Figured I could run with the lady since I wasn’t racing Iron Hill or the Piscitello Law crit in Malvern.

I got to the start and of course couldn’t find the lady in the ‘green’ corral. Gulp… I really don’t like running but got in the groove after 3miles. By mile 6 or so the right calf felt like murder. I hobbled the rest of the way and dipped out 0.5 miles before the final chute.

it was honestly kinda fun (cant believe im saying that) but now I’m paying for running 9.5 miles with no training. It will be a slow slow bicycle commute tomorrow morning.
