Crossasaurus Awesome 2013

28 Oct

Crossasaurus Awesome is has been one of my favorite races for the last couple years. Not because the course is amazing but because of the single speed cross races they have at the end of the day. Both of our start times were in the afternoon so we actually go to sleep in Sunday morning which was amazing. We got up there and watched the end of the Mens B race.

Lauren crushed a few souls and ended up 3rd in the Cat 3/4 Women’s felid and her first time on the podium. Woo!

Main goal for the day was to not get lapped as we were doing 10 laps or something crazy due to the short/fast course. For another week in a row I scrambled to get myself together before the race and get warmed-up. I did spin on a trainer for 15min beforehand periodically jumping off to scream on the ladies. I went off easy in the Men’s A 1/2/3 race and sat in behind Ryan on his SSCX rig. Eventually I made my way past riders (most who were off their bikes after crashing) and was trying to get the legs warmed-up.

I think during the 2nd lap I slid out and braaaap, snapped off my front brand new shifter, fuuuuuuu!!! Good thing I had just tightened it before the race… For the remaining 8 laps I was either in the drops or doing some weird crab move with my left hand as there was no hood to hold onto. I did learn I suck at riding tight corners in the drops, or I just cant corner well in things like that. I also learned not to try out new tubeless tires for the first time in a race. Meh. I didn’t even check my results and I think I lost my Garmin somewhere. Luckily there was a SSCX race to cheer me up.

No reason to talk about the goodness. Awesome costumes, beer in pumpkins, hardcore heckling, grain alcohol, and great people.

West Chester Cross 2013 – Video

22 Oct

Video:

1st Lap of the Mens Elite 1/2/3 race.

West Chester Cross 2013

22 Oct

This is the second year of West Chester Cross and I remember I enjoyed the course from last year. There is a fun amount of elevation changes/rollers throughout the course that many of our local races dont have. We left the city around 7:30 and made it there a bit before 8:30 so the lady could get some laps in before her 10am race. I helped pin some Cmen up and got ready to heckle a bit.

I did a lot of things wrong for this race. Even though I was at the venue all day I only got in 2 laps on the course. Not a biggie but also no real reason to get some slow laps in. Then with about 5minutes until we were about to grid up I was still messing around with my bike and hadn’t warmed up at all. Bleh. I got a quick road lap in then got to the start area.

I was #10 from racing Townhall and with 2 no shows at the line got some front row call-up action. Oooohie! From the whistle it was fast with Jack taking the front and me sitting in 2nd on his wheel. He looked back at me a couple times for either me to pull through or see if anyone was making a move but I was more than content sitting in as my legs were already giving me a sign of ‘You didn’t warm-up dum-dum.’ We got to the 2 small stairs which I was thinking Id run the first lap but sitting in 2nd was going to do what Jack did. Unfortunately I didn’t know he was gonna ride the 1st and run the 2nd and I bobbled hard trying to unclip.

The rest of the first lap was pretty much every person in the race passing me like I wasn’t even trying. Eventually I’m in no-mans-land and mentally I feel like crap. I lose most of my drive and when Hal passes me I let him go without trying to tack on. Bleh. Nothing happens for a few laps other than me falling back and Myles catching up to me… with 2 to go he gets me by the single barrier and I let him go. With about 1 to go I get a bit pissed at myself for not going harder and I real Myles back in. I almost get to his wheel before the sprint but cant quite make it happen and roll across the line 17th/21.

I still need to somehow get to the point where I can push myself when no-ones around. Its all mental… I just need to bridge that gap.

Cooper River Cross (CRCX) – 2013

15 Oct

Here is a video of the first lap in the Men’s A 1/2/3 race. enjoy!

We packed up the car around 7:30am with hopes to get to Cooper River Cross (CRCX) early to help Jeff and the team out with whatever was needed.  Luckily the venue is right over the Ben Franklin Bridge for us and take about 15mins to get there.

Men’s A 1/2/3 stolen photos (thanks Keith!)

Ahh the A race… 60min of pure pain.  This was my second go at the elite race but this time the field was a bit more legit with some actual pro cross races.  I wont talk much to it because I barely raced, I mean I finished but I didn’t race-race.  I just couldn’t get into a flow and never made the big group that was dangling in front of me after the first lap or two.  I broke apart pretty early and went for beer handups and fun rather than trying to move up.  Even though the result was poor I had a blast.  It was great getting cheered on by all my friends/teammates then half a lap later getting heckled HARD by the LoneWolfCycling crew!

All I hear was AreYouKitten me this… and “I’m disappointed in you/I don’t even know you anymore Dreamburg” due to my running of the stairs.  So I wont give any excuses for sucking during my race, BUT I will say is I didn’t pre-ride the steps because my left clip is super loose and pulls out all the time (yah just replace the cleat dum-dum) but of course I went for it during the race in order to get heckled less and of course my left foot pulled out and womp-womp… FAIL!

Had a blast (minus my back making me want to cry) and found out I didn’t even get my max HR to what I can normally AVG in a 45min race.  Next race I need to work on not blowing up I guess. Ended up 24th/47

Mens Cat 2/3/4 – B Race:

I wont talk to my race too much since the video shows most of it but it was a fun tough race. Coming into it I knew I wasn’t going to be hanging with Mark or Bernie and was gunning for a top10. I got a 1st row call-up and came out of the prologue in 3rd behind Bernie and Sean. Sean went down after the first turn and I was already going low with nowwhere to go. I tried to bunnyhop/ran into him and hoped off my bike and started running with my bike on one side of the tape and my person on the other. After bobbling around a stake I jumped the tape, yelled out a hoot&holler and proceeded to jump on Andrey’s wheel. This was about the time a FreddieFu guy yelled at me and I may have cursed at him a bit then chopped him hard after the run-up. Throughout the race I traded spots with a slew of regulars which made the race a blast. The off-camber mud bog became wild and i was doing a one footed half crank ride through it everylap until i tried to run it once (shown at the end of the video) and i almost ate it hard… Somewhere mid way through #Pro CRCA cat1 roadie Alejandro Guzman cruised past me but that was the inevitable. After that I sat in with a couple of groups with Myles, Caleb, and a few others before Sean (Elite Endurance Training Systems) formed a big gap on me that I was never able to reel back until the last lap when I saw him and Guzman not too far ahead. I gave it some gusto as I knew Guzman must have had a mechanical if he was drifting back but wasn’t able to close it down and slowly rolled past the line getting 5th out of 88 racer. This course really lends itself to my strengths and I had one of my best races ever. I felt good about the day.

Off-Week

8 Oct

The lady and I traveled down to SC to hang out a bit with my family. It was good to take a week off from amateur bike racing. The 90F weather helped the cause and local beers were consumed in mass quantities. Nothing to complain about here!

Next weekend is another fun/tough double weekend with Whirleybird CX and Phillies closest cyclocross race Cooper River Cross in its second year. If you live in/around philly you should ride over the Bridge to race or at least spectate/heckle. I promise itll be a good time.
