West Chester CX 2015 #2 (WCCX)

8 Dec

From what I hear this is the last version of the West Chester Cross Race since the land its ran on is for sale or sold. With that being said and my lack of racing I decided to go out and race a bit.

Mens A 1/2/3 Race Video – 1st lap

The day before I ventured out to the brubs to do some failed Criagslisting, run by Bikesport, and ride with Glenn, Eric Ness, and Jamie. We decided to ‘tackle’ MattB’s firbird ride. Well i think it was a ride. Im pretty sure we rode bikes to/from drinking spot at least. Sections were gnar, people were great, and i got to do a bit of heckling, ie my favorite past time. all in all a solid day but i was exhausted from 76, and the grocery story, and such, not from riding…

Fast forward to sunday morning and im getting ALL the kittens rangeled and getting my bike into race shape. I roll out around 10:30am and pick up GregWhits and we hit the road.

The weather is too nice to be real. SS kits/skinsuits in Dec?! areyoukittenme?! The course is muddier than expected but we were told it was super icey/frosty that morning. The wind was minimal at most with the sun beating down. I watched/heckled the B-men and watched superstar-saxton ride at the front of the race for a while.

I warmed up a little bit and spun around, went down to the start and slotted in 2nd row behind MG. The whistle blows and MG misses a pedal and I skoot around him slotting in behind Jack on the road section and 5th coming into the grass. Ruether takes a low line around me quickly after and I sit in for a while. I realized iM not so good at this part yet… the race isnt super fast, everyone sitting in, BUT you need to keep you position and not get overtaken by everyone. I definitely need to work on this part as im not quite aggressive enough.

I sit in on the large front of the group for the next 1.5laps letting people in front of me if they need. COming around the U-turn before the pit I loose my front wheel and eat it infront of MG. Sorry Mikey!! for what its worth its the first time ive actually fallen all season which i think is probaly a bad thing. anyways this put a gap to the lead group and they have to hustle to try to latch on. I on the other hand jump on and realize my RD is a lil borked so i soft pedal 1/4 of the course, reach up to grab the course tape, and ride over to the car and call it a day.

The good news was I was able to get GregWhits getting his first 1/2/3 win ever?! Afterwards our crew hit Su Tao HARD!!! solid weekend and a not so solid day of racing. I think that may be it for me this season. as usual tons to work for next season. just hoping I have the will power to make it happen.

now bring on the snow! i need a break from bikes.

Sly Fox Cross 2015

8 Dec

After its debut last year in 2014. Sly Fox Cross (SFCX) has become the most fun/anticipated local race of the PACX bar none. MattyB, Topher, and Nick put on a great event with great beer, great people, and a course that is actually fun to ride?!

This year we left the city early-early to help setup before the start of the race. I brought my race gear/bike but after the disaster that was me at CRCX I knew I should maybe not try to help all day AND race. This became easy to swallow as I started to drink some AM-beers. I worked the gate right by the run-up most of the day and got to heckle and shoot photos from there while getting a lap or two in when I could. The vibe and enegry was great, there were people there who definitely didn’t ride bikes, and there was even a camera crew who did a live streaming of the A race.

A bit bummed to have not raced but it was a great time from morning to night. I don’t even think I saw all that many casualties from the real race or the wild-SSCX fun ‘race’

2015 Charm City Cross

UCI Men – Day 1 – Prologue

Strava UCI Men Day 1:

Wildness at the flyover. I had to edit out the bad crash… a bit too wild to post on this blog. Glad everyone was alright from the sounds of it.

Usually we all make the traffic ridden drive Friday night after work to Baltimore for Charm City Cross but this year we opted to wake up at 6am in order to get there before the 8:30am race for Lauren.  6am – 3:15pm is a long day before your race starts.  Im always pretty bad at remembering to eat and drink throughout the day while getting my cheer/heckle on. We got everything setup then lurked around a bit.  We got into a conversation with some parents of the newly developed children’s cyclocross team that had 20+ riders in the new 8:30am juniors field.  It was seriously awesome to see how many kids were racing for the first year and having a blast. 2015 Cooper River Cross – CRCX

13 Oct

We woke up around 6:30am, packed the car and got over to help Jeff getting things ready for race day.  They had trudged around in the wild rain the day before and got the majority of the course done with little to clean up tape wise that morning.

For the amount of wild rain we had just gotten I was seriously amazed how dry the course was.  there was one section that eventually got turned up and slightly ‘sloggy’ but there was almost no mud at all.  It was crazy.

I helped with starts/heckled everyone which is one of my specialties.

I ended up racing later in the day but by the second lap my back hated me and the pressure I had set and we soft pedaled in and out of the saddle for the next +40mins. Ooof! I had a blast at the race but could have done without the racing part. I was so out of it for no reason before the race. I pinned Blakes number upside down and I forgot to take my warm-up pants off before I started racing… All in all a solid day with a solid crew!

I need to upload the GoPro video still!

2015 Nittany Cross – Day 1 & 2

14 Sep

Ahhh Nittany Cross. The 1st real race of the season for most. Always fun seeing old friends and catching up while at the same time realizing A) you didn’t actually train that hard and B) you really are not sure if you ‘like’ racing

Day 1s race went well for me. Lined up 2nd to last row. Got into a group with Jack and rode with him until we got pulled w 2 to go. Somehow the officials never placed me but o well.

Day 2s race didnt go as well. Was in about the same range then the back acted up and I soft pedaled until Bossmans got close enough to get pulled w 3 to go.

Sly Fox Cross – 2014

10 Nov

This was the 1st year of Sly Fox Cross out in Pottstown, PA at the Sly Fox Brewery. I was pretty excited for this race as I knew the crew had put in a crazy amount of effort cutting brand new trails in behind the brewery for the last 2-3 months after they heard that Sly Fox wanted to put on a cross race. They killed it for having such a small amount of time! I think the only constant complaint I heard all day was about the short laps which was a known flaw and is already being worked on by extending the trails for next year. The only plus to this was you got use to the course and spectating was very easy.

The course was very technical in the woods with plenty of opportunity to crash/ have mechanicals which I personally like. Riding around in the grass isn’t all that fun sometimes. To top it off there was the most legit run-up ive ever been apart of with lines of people heckling/cheering on both sides during EVERY SINGLE RACE. It really made you feel like you were at a huge race.

In my opinion this was the best event of the year thus far. MattyB’s goal was to put on an underground (think Bilenky) type of race that was ‘real’ and he fully succeeded. Props bud, you killed it!! Ive never seen this many people out in a local PACX race especially in November. On top of that people actually hung out all day, something that rarely happens. It felt like even more people hanging for the later races compared to huge races like Nittany Cross.

Big thanks to everyone who put this on/helped out… MattyB, Topher, Nick, BikeSport, Sly Fox Brewery, Orchid Euro, Sunnybrook Racing

Mens A 1/2/3

Not much to talk about. Made a couple aggressive moves to get towards the front at the start. Was feeling good and was in front of a lot of people im not usually in front of and flatted the rear (running a clincher/tube like a dum-dum). Didn’t have a pit bike so I opted out. Had a blast during the race and cant wait for next year.

2014 Nittany Lion Cross – UCI Men

8 Sep

— Saturday at Nittany Lion Cross —

This is the first big race of the season, the first race we were doing, and my first UCI race ever. I was excited to see a slew of cross buds but was more than a bit weary of doing the A-race. We got there before the 9:00am C-men race so the lady could pre-ride before her race, ie we were going to be there all day. The course was pretty much the same as always, with some of the roots covered in a small amount of loose dirt which meant that section was a cloud of dust if you were towards the back.

Ill keep my race recap short. I roll up to get my tire width checked and my front barely fits… guess tubes-n-clinchers really aren’t pro!? Im probably 3rd to last row with 45 starters. Im usually really nervous staring a cross race but I wasn’t nervous at all. Honestly I didn’t even know we were ready to start and was barely clipped in and focused before they blew the whistle. I lined up all the way to the left like a dum-dum and kept it civil during the start. I was told before the race to ride aggressive and make moves when I could. I tried to rail turns and pump out all the power these legs could handle…

That approach worked pretty well for the first 2 laps then BAM. I blew up sooooooo hard. My legs seemed alright my but lungs… my lungs did NOT like what I was doing at all. In a short section I think 10 riders went around me. Bleeeeh. The rest of my race was me riding by myself thinking, ‘Why am I doing this again?!’ I made it 45minuntes being 2 laps down before getting pulled. Not sure why they give people DNF’s now for getting pulled but oh well. I ended up 3rd to last, exactly where cross-results had placed me.

I have so much to work on in order to actually get in the mix. Im never going to be towards the front, but id like to make it through a full UCI race without getting pulled one day.
